Hamber Provincial Park is a remote protected area on the British Columbia-Alberta boundary, surrounding the headwaters of the Wood River at Fortress Lake and bordered on three sides by Jasper National Park. Established in 1941 and named for Eric W. Hamber, it was initially one of Canada’s largest protected wilderness areas, but plans to create a larger linked mountain park system never materialized. Pressures from logging, mining, hydroelectric development, and transportation projects led the province to reduce the park by 98 percent in 1961 and 1962. Today it remains a roadless wilderness park and part of the Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks UNESCO World Heritage Site.
