Master shipbuilder Marlboro Packard built this house in 1851 and lived here with his wife, Mary, as they raised their children. After Abraham Lincoln's assassination in 1865, Marlboro and his friend Captain Nickels planted a northern white cedar tree on the southeastern corner of the property to mark the sad occasion. Lightning struck down the tree in 1999, and local artist Rob Cowan carved a likeness of Marlboro Packard into its trunk.
