Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park is a remote water-and-lava landscape in northeastern Shasta County, accessible only by boat. Fed by snowmelt from the Medicine Lake Volcano highlands, powerful freshwater springs flow into local channels, lakes, and the Fall River system amid a geologically young field of basalt lava. The park’s name honors the Achomawi of the Pit River Tribe, who built fish traps here and carefully managed spawning beds and catches; they still live in the area. The shoreline also reflects later private use, including levees, canals, and a muskrat farm, before California acquired the land in 1975 as a lightly developed park.
