Burney Falls, on Burney Creek in McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park in northern California, drops 129 feet and is distinguished by water that pours both over the main brink and directly from the cliff face. Fed by springs above and within the falls, its flow stays remarkably steady even in dry summer months, sending about 379 million liters, or 100 million U.S. gallons, through the basalt each day. Long celebrated for its beauty, it was called the “Eighth Wonder of the World” by Theodore Roosevelt, became a National Natural Landmark in December 1954, and remains one of the region’s best-known natural attractions.
