McArthur–Burney Falls Memorial State Park, about 6 miles north of Burney where the Cascade Range meets the Modoc Plateau, is California’s second oldest state park. Its best-known feature is 129-foot Burney Falls, where water from Burney Creek and springs in porous volcanic basalt pours into a misty basin before flowing to Lake Britton. The landscape was formed by ancient volcanic activity that created a vast underground reservoir feeding the falls. The park’s name reflects local pioneer history, honoring Samuel Burney and the McArthur family, whose descendants helped protect the waterfall and surrounding land by donating it to the state in the 1920s.
