Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom in Dorneyville, near Allentown, grew from Solomon Dorney’s trout hatchery and summer resort, established in 1860, into a public leisure grounds by 1870 and then into a trolley park after rail service reached it in 1899. Founded as an amusement park in 1884, it is one of only fourteen operating trolley parks in the United States and the nation’s fifth-oldest continuously operating amusement park. Over time it evolved from picnic groves and simple attractions into a major amusement and water park, with historic rides, notable roller coasters, and a long record of expansion, ownership changes, and adaptation.
