World's Fair Park was the site of the 1982 World's Fair, held from May 1, 1982, to October 31, 1982, and attended by 11 million visitors. President Ronald Reagan opened the fair with Mayor Randy Tyree and the Knoxville City Council: M.T. Bellah, Arthur Blanchard, Casey Jones, Hoyle McNeil, Bernice O'Connor, Milton E. Roberts, Sr., Jack C. Sharp, L.B. Steele, and Jean Teague. In September 1998, Mayor Victor Ashe installed World's Fair Park with the Knoxville City Council of Jack Sharp, Vice Mayor, Mark A. Brown, Barbara Pelot, Larry Cox, Rob Frost, Steve Hall, Joe Hultquist, Carlene Malone, Ed Shouse, Jean Teague, Danny Mayfield, Nick Pavlis, Gary Underwood, Raleigh Wynn, Sr., and Ivan Harmon, with substantial support provided by Knox County. The Public Building Authority of the County of Knox and the City of Knoxville served as project manager, Clark/Denark, a joint venture, was construction manager, Ross/Fowler was architect and landscape architect, and the park was renovated in 2003.
