Angel Site was a large prehistoric town that flourished between 1000-1450 C.E. With towering earthworks, a broad plaza and well-built homes, Angel was an important regional center for people living along the Lower Ohio. At its peak, around 1,000 people lived and worked here. Hundreds more probably came in from outlying communities for festivals or special events. When Europeans arrived, the site was already abandoned. Archaeologists later noticed that the earthworks and plaza looked like other sites in the Mississippi River Valley. The people at Angel probably shared a similar culture with these other sites, now called “Mississippian.”
