Old Hartford on the Ocmulgee, near the ancient site of Ocute on the eastward flowing river where the Hitchiti Indians dwelt, was visited by De Soto and his army when they reached Ocute, capital town of Ocute Province, on April 9, 1540, remained for three days, and set up a cross for worship before departing.
