Charles E. Wheeler Wildlife Management Area is a 750-acre brackish tidal marsh and state wildlife refuge at the mouth of the Housatonic River in Devon, Milford, Connecticut. Protected as a state holding in the 1950s and renamed in 1955 for conservationist and legislator Charles E. “Shang” Wheeler, it reflects his work to preserve these wetlands and support Milford Harbor’s fisheries laboratory. Shielded by Milford Point, the estuarine marsh of channels, creeks, and islands is one of Long Island Sound’s most important migratory bird stopover areas. The refuge has also been shaped by dredging and river management, and today supports recreation and seasonal hunting with water-only access.
