The Crisfield Historical Museum presents exhibits on Native American culture, seafood harvesting and processing, and the general history of the town, while the Governor Tawes Library houses exhibits on Maryland’s 54th governor, J. Millard Tawes of Crisfield, and the Ward Brothers Workshop honors Lem and Steve Ward, founders of the art of decoy carving and painting. The museum also offers the Port of Crisfield Escorted Walking Tour. Smith Island, Maryland’s only inhabited island accessible only by boat, can be reached by mail boat from Crisfield to Ewell, one of the island’s three towns, where the Smith Island Cultural Center preserves the history of the men and women who have maintained their way of life since 1657. Assateague Island National Seashore is a windswept thirty-seven-mile barrier island known for wild horses, Sika deer, and nearly three hundred species of birds, with undeveloped white sand beaches, dunes, back bays, aquariums, children’s exhibits, and summer nature programs. Janes Island State Park offers three thousand six hundred acres for camping, boating, fishing, hiking, crabbing, bicycling, and birdwatching.
