A cider house stored and operated a cider press. Usually located along the roadside so wagons could deliver apples easily, cider houses had large doors often found in the cave side. Sometimes a stationary steam engine was located outside the barn to operate the press using belts. As the press squeezed the juice out of the apples, it was poured into containers, often wooden barrels. On the Schaeffer Farm, cider was distilled into apple whiskey in the 18th century. This cider press dates from the 1890s and was moved here from the John Krall farm, near Myerstown, in 1977.
