Seventy-nine militia men under the command of Capt. Nathan S. Blount marched from this site to Gainesville to muster into the CS Army and rendered gallant service from April 10, 1862, to April 26, 1865, serving with Company E of the 7th Florida Infantry Regiment, known as the South Florida Bulldogs, in campaigns and battles including Richmond, Kentucky, Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, Dalton, Mill Creek Gap, Rocky Face Ridge, Resaca, New Hope Church, Cassville, Dallas, Acworth, Kennesaw Mountain, Peachtree Creek, Atlanta, Utoy Creek, Jonesboro, Franklin, Nashville, and Bentonville.
