Fort Meade was built by Lt. George G. Meade, who later became commanding general of the Union forces during the Civil War. It served as the headquarters of a military area during the Seminole Indian War from 1849 to 1858. Several engagements with hostile forces were fought near here, and the post was garrisoned by U.S. Army and Florida Mounted Volunteer troops.
