Dr. Mahlon Loomis, buried in the cemetery, sent the first aerial signals from 1866 to 1873 in work that foreshadowed wireless telegraphy. The signals were sent 14 miles using kites flown by copper wires. He received a patent in 1872, and Congress chartered his company in 1873.
