In Fremont’s Niles district, the Niles Essanay Silent Film Museum occupies the century-old Edison Theater near the former Niles Essanay Studios, where Broncho Billy and Charlie Chaplin made films in the 1910s. Closely tied to one of early American moviemaking’s important centers, it preserves silent films and their history through a major collection of equipment, artifacts, and about 10,000 films. It also continues to screen the works it safeguards. Its restoration and research have drawn broader notice, including David Kiehn’s work dating A Trip Down Market Street to just before the 1906 earthquake and a collaboration with Google on a 2011 Chaplin birthday Doodle.
