Support for the Lincoln Highway was widespread among national, civic, and nonprofit organizations, which backed projects and events to encourage the highway’s growth and development and to express patriotism. Among the national groups involved were the Grand Army of the Republic and the Daughters of the American Revolution. The Daughters of the American Revolution, a national women’s organization dedicated to historic preservation, education, and patriotism, announced plans to plant floral flags in city parks and on public and private properties on or near the Lincoln Highway across the country. The Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization of Union Army veterans who had served in the American Civil War, also promoted the highway, and in 1916 its auxiliary, the Women’s Relief Corps, campaigned to provide every schoolhouse along the Lincoln Highway with a standard-size American flag.
