At 10:35 a.m. on December 17, 1903, Orville Wright was at the controls in what is possibly the most famous aviation picture of all time, while Wilbur Wright ran alongside to balance the machine on the monorail and had just let go of the right wing. Orville Wright wrote in Diary D on December 14, 1903, that a couple of small boys who had come with the men from the station made a hurried departure over the hill for home on hearing the engine start. The brothers realized their dream of flight after years of struggle, and Wilbur later said of their Kitty Hawk camp, where they lived and worked for three seasons, that it was the best time of our lives.
