The Welcome Center contains a gift shop, birthplace office, and apartment of the live-in caretaker. The Museum, built to resemble a barn, displays the Wright Flyer replica, and the Community Room is available for a wide variety of events. To the rear is the shelter house that was moved from the site where the Welcome Center now stands, and the back porch is often referred to as the Wrights' laundry room. Susan's garden was located at the present site of the barn. The five-acre farm had chickens, a milk cow, a pig, and a horse. The replica barn contains many tools appropriate to the era, and the original barn was located on the museum site. The outhouse, or privy, was an outside toilet, and this one is a two-seater deluxe model. The smokehouse is an original building where hickory smoke was used to cure meat, which could be stored there for a year or more. Life was hard, but simple and geared toward being responsible, resourceful, and self-sufficient.
