Fitzgerald's Station stood here on the Old Wire Road as part of the Butterfield Overland mail route from St. Louis to San Francisco. The first trip ran in 1858 and the last in 1861. It was the longest and best conducted mail route in the world, stretching 2795 miles, with service twice weekly, a fare of $200.00, a travel time of 25 days, and 140 stations for the exchange of horses and passengers.
