Waterbury honored soldiers from the city who became prisoners of war or were missing in action while serving the nation in war. Those named were Sgt. Victor J. Choinere of the U.S. Army, born in November 1931 and missing in action in November 1950; Cpl. Dennis Rush of the U.S. Army, born in February 1930 and missing in action in November 1950; Cpl. Donald L. Humiston of the U.S. Army, born in May 1929 and missing in action in July 1952; First Lieutenant Gerard P. Cyr of the U.S.A.F., born in Waterbury, Connecticut, in August 1927 and missing in action in Korea on March 12, 1952; and Master Sergeant Andre R. Guillet of the U.S.A.F., born in Waterbury, Connecticut, on December 17, 1943 and missing in action in Southeast Asia on May 18, 1966. It also honored all prisoners of war and missing in action from the Korean War, 1950 to 1953, and dedicated the Freedom Tree in 1974 to Capt. Ronald Maverick and to all prisoners of war and missing in action in the vision of universal freedom for all mankind.
