The Minneapolis Institute of Art is one of the United States’ larger art museums, with more than 100,000 works spanning roughly 5,000 years and six continents. Founded in 1883 as the Minneapolis Society of Fine Arts, it grew from borrowed exhibition spaces into a major museum whose Beaux-Arts main building opened in 1915, later expanded in 1974 and 2006. Free general admission, public programs, and school outreach reflect its long emphasis on public access. Its wide-ranging collections are especially strong in Asian art, and the institution has been shaped by major philanthropy, public support, evolving leadership, and recent controversies over staffing and provenance.
