Tantiusques in Sturbridge, Massachusetts, is a 57-acre historic and archaeological landscape where the Nipmuc once used local graphite for ceremonial paints before commercial mining began. Mining started in 1644 under John Winthrop the Younger, passed through the Winthrop family, and became more successful after 1828 under Frederic Tudor, continuing until his death in 1864. The site later employed workers connected to what became Dixon Ticonderoga and also includes the Crowd Site, home of mine worker Robert Crowd and his family. Forest now covers the property, but trenches, shafts, paths, and household artifacts preserve its industrial, social, and natural history.
