Manitou Island Light Station on Lake Superior off Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula developed from an 1850 rubble-stone lighthouse into a larger navigational complex centered on the present 1861 iron skeletal tower and keeper’s house. Built by the West Point Foundry, the tower is the oldest iron skeletal light tower on the Great Lakes and one of only two of its type from that year still surviving. Over time the station added fog signal, oil house, boathouse, and other support buildings to meet Lake Superior’s shipping needs. Automated in 1978, it remains active, and since 2004 the site has been publicly accessible.
