Early Indian footpaths became trails for explorers, missionaries, and fur traders who came to carve out homes in Michigan’s wilderness. Early settlers widened and improved these trails, and they became most of Michigan’s primary road system. U.S. 41 begins its southbound journey here, crossing eight states—Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Georgia—before ending in Miami, Florida, a distance of 1990 miles.
