Lime Kiln Light is an active lighthouse at Lime Kiln Point on the west side of San Juan Island, aiding ships in Haro Strait from a rocky shoreline above Dead Man’s Bay. The point’s name recalls lime kilns built there in the 1860s. A light was first established there in 1914, and the present 38-foot octagonal concrete tower, rising from the fog signal building, was added five years later. Its fourth-order Fresnel lens first shone on June 30, 1919, and the station became Washington’s last major light. Automated in August 1962, it still serves navigation, now with a modern optic installed in 1998.
