Discovery Island Light, built in 1886 on Pandora Hill, the highest point of Discovery Island in British Columbia, has long guided navigation along the surrounding coast. Its history is closely linked to Richard Brinn, the first keeper, and his daughter Mary Ann Croft, who assisted him and, after his death in 1902, became Canada’s first female lighthouse keeper. Croft remained there until 1932, living on the island for 46 years before retiring to Victoria with a small pension. The station stayed manned for 110 years until automation in 1996; its foghorn was removed in 2004. The light remains active despite deteriorating buildings.
