From 1861 to 1865, Confederate soldiers were honored as defenders of the Confederacy whose fortitude and heroism in the service of their country were held to be the proud heritage of a loyal posterity. The monument was erected by the Longstreet Chapter Daughters of the Confederacy, dedicated to Southern convictions, consecrated to Southern valor, and unveiled June 7, 1909.
