During the Revolutionary War in 1777, British General Sir William Howe campaigned to capture Philadelphia. As he marched from Cooch’s Bridge to Kennett Square and onward to the Battle of Brandywine, Howe and his army passed through Mill Creek Hundred, ransacking farms and taking livestock and supplies. The Daniel Nichols House, approximately 100 yards east of this site, served as Howe’s headquarters during an encampment along Limestone Road on September 8 and 9, 1777, when Generals Cornwallis, Grant, and Knyphausen joined him.
