Black cowboys have been part of Texas history since the early nineteenth century. As outriders, they worked to keep cattle together and moving as a herd. Their leather chaps bore the marks of many mesquite thorns and protected their legs from brush along the trail. Some eventually became ranch foremen and managers, many were hired as federal peace officers in the Indian Territory, and others ultimately owned their own farms and ranches.
