During World War II and the Korean Conflict, a series of training accidents claimed the lives of servicemen connected with aircraft and vehicle crashes. On March 14, 1943, an Aeronca L-3C Grasshopper crash killed Emil M. Horkavi of Gary, Indiana, and Frank M. Dimond of Wilmington, California. B-17 Flying Fortress accidents on November 4, 1943, February 12, 1944, April 24, 1944, and September 24, 1944, killed crews from communities across the United States. A truck accident on August 3, 1944, also took four lives. At Ardmore Air Force Base during the Korean Conflict, from 1953 to 1959, a Fairchild C-119 Flying Boxcar crash on March 19, 1954, killed six more servicemen. Together these losses included men from Indiana, California, Arkansas, Illinois, Missouri, New Jersey, Maryland, Michigan, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Texas, Ohio, Utah, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Oregon, Washington, Iowa, New York, Tennessee, North Carolina, Kansas, and Maine.
