St. Peter’s Episcopal parish was organized in 1740 by eleven families who wanted their Church of England and first built a small church in what is now Thomaston, near the present site of St. Thomas Church. By 1796, the parish had outgrown that building and erected a new church on this site. On February 27, 1915, the church burned, probably from a wood stove, and parishioners gathered stones from their fields and walls to build a new church on the site of the present-day First Baptist Church of Plymouth. Nearby, in 1747, the Ecclesiastical Society of Northbury acquired four acres for a church, a cemetery, and a local militia training ground. Two meetinghouses stood there before the present-day Congregational Church was built in 1838, and the Green long remained the center of community events such as Memorial Day parades and old Home Days, including one gathering where Tom Hogan pole vaulted over a high bar with St. Peter’s Church in the background.
