Carrollton Covered Bridge, built in 1856 over the Buckhannon River near Carrollton, West Virginia, is one of the state’s oldest and longest surviving covered bridges and still carries traffic on Route 36. Constructed by Emmet J. O'Brien and Daniel O'Brien for the Middle Fork Turnpike, it reflects the importance of covered timber bridges in regional transportation. Built with Burr trusses and multiple kingpost trusses, it originally had a notably long clear span. Altered in 1962 after being judged unsafe, it was later listed on the National Register of Historic Places, renovated more than once, damaged by arson in 2017, and restored in 2022.
