Franklin's Confederate soldiers were honored for heroic deeds, self-sacrifice, devotion to duty and country, and for giving their lives and fortunes for constitutional liberty and state sovereignty in obedience to the teachings of the fathers who framed the Constitution and established the union of the states; after Appomattox, the Confederate soldier was portrayed as turning to face the future unashamed and unafraid.
