Nature
The Cumberland Valley’s Hagerstown Silt Loam developed from a landscape shaped over immense spans of time. About 500 million years ago, the area lay beneath a shallow, warm ocean where limestone formed. About 250 million years ago, the collision of the African and North American continents caused the land to crumple and rise as the water drained away. Weathering and erosion then created the valley and ridge province, leaving sandstone ridges to the north and south and a limestone band between them that rainwater gradually dissolved to form the valley. The rock beneath this area is about 90% limestone, and the remaining 10%, left after the limestone weathered over centuries, became the Hagerstown Silt Loam found in the valley’s farm fields. This nutrient-rich, well-drained, moderately permeable soil is ideal for field, vegetable, orchard, and pasture crops and helped support extensive, productive agriculture in the Cumberland Valley beginning in the early 1700s and continuing today. Because it takes about 100 years to form one inch of high-quality topsoil, farmers turned to no-till methods, first widely employed in the 1940s, to preserve soil quality and reduce erosion by minimizing disruption during planting and harvesting. In no-till farming, special plows cut only a narrow furrow for seed and fertilizer, which is then closed after planting, helping protect nutrients from exposure to air and reducing runoff during heavy rains. Silt loam itself consists of about 20% sand, 60% silt, and 20% clay, and traces of iron in the clay give the valley’s soil its orange coloration.
