· Gardens of Grandeur
History
6
By 1869, Meek had acquired some 3,000 acres, much of it former grounds of the Spanish land grant held by Soto. In 1877, the Hayward Journal praised the estate's handsome architecture, symmetrically planted grounds, sinuous walks and drives, sturdy primeval oaks, rare exotics, and large attractive fountain, which gave the place an air of elegance, wealth, and refinement.
