The M3 half-track was one of the world’s first armored personnel carriers, a U.S. Army vehicle that was half-wheeled and half-tracked and saw service around the world. Its sides were lightly armored to protect against shell fragments, and a back door allowed easy entry and exit; the example at the FHCAM was made by the White Motor Company of Cleveland, Ohio, whose wartime advertising used the tagline, "Trucks You Don't Steer … You Aim." The M59 armored personnel carrier entered service in the spring of 1954 as a replacement for the M75 and offered three main advantages over it: amphibious capability, a lower profile, and much lower production cost. About 6,300 M59s were built before production ended in 1960. The GMC M220 shop van was part of the M-135 Series of 2 1/2 ton cargo trucks, the first successor to the World War II "deuce and a half," which had been the backbone of mobility in all theaters of that war; the M135 platform was highly versatile and could carry many different kinds of military equipment.
