Warren Sibley Cushman was a respected painter, sculptor, photographer, musician, and inventor from Woodstock. Born there on January 17, 1845, to Franklin and Susan (Gifford) Cushman, he had three siblings, Julius, Charles, and Lucy. During the Civil War, he served as a bugler for the 134th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In 1867 he married Jocele Calender, and they had four children: Scott, Mabel, Byron, and Charlotte. Mostly self-taught as an artist, he traveled to Washington D.C. in 1875 to study the collections at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. He created the towering Cushman monument in Woodstock’s Rush Township cemetery and is believed to have shown his painting “Spanish Dancing Girls” at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. Some of his work survives in public and private collections. He died on April 20, 1926.
