U.S. 2 is the major highway between the Atlantic and Lake Champlain, leading through St. Johnsbury, the maple sugar center, down the Winooski River to Montpelier, through the tallest mountains at Bolton Gorge, and to Lake Champlain at Burlington, a university center and the state’s largest city.
