Born April 22nd, 1832, Edward Cross was mortally wounded July 2nd, 1863, while leading the 1st Brigade, 1st Division, 2nd Army Corps at the Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He raised and disciplined the Fighting Fifth, which performed distinguished service through the war and was led by him in the battles of Rappahannock, Fair Oaks, Yorktown, Savages Station, Peach Orchard, White Oak Swamp, Malvern Hill, Charles City, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. An accomplished journalist, brave pioneer, chivalric soldier, affectionate son, true friend, and faithful craftsman, he lived a life of adventure in the commercial and political centers and in the distant territories of the Republic before dying for its honor and integrity on the field of honor.
