Black Bart attacked the La Port [sic]–Oroville stage here on July 13, 1888, but Frank N. Morse, the driver, was supported by George Hackett, the armed messenger for Wells Fargo Express, and the attack was repulsed. Black Bart is credited with twenty eight stage hold-ups in California from 1875 to 1883 and was known as a lone and genial bandit poet who always traveled on foot. In San Francisco he posed as a mining man, roomed at the Webb House on Second Street, and was captured through evidence from a laundry mark. He was sent to San Quentin for six years and was released for good behavior on January 23, 1888.
