Dailey’s Park honors John and Ann Rebecca Dailey, who owned and operated the Glades Hotel in Oakland from 1859 to 1881, while John Dailey also managed the Revere House in Cumberland for several years and operated the Deer Park Hotel for one season. In the 1870s he created a large public park in Oakland along Second and Liberty streets between the train station and railroad crossing, and although that area was later occupied by various businesses, a small portion of the former park was re-established in 1999. Their daughter Mary was the wife of Union General George Crook, and John and Ann Rebecca Dailey are buried beneath a large monument in the old Oakland Cemetery. The gazebo and gas house now in the park came from the Deer Park Hotel grounds, part of Garrett County’s rise as a tourist destination in the late 1880s and early 1900s under the influence of Baltimore and Ohio Railroad president John Garrett, whose railroad built large hotels in Oakland and Deer Park in the 1870s. The gazebo was donated in 1999 and restored and moved to the park, while the gas house, donated in 2000, was reconstructed on the site after its stones were removed, numbered, and reset; the nearby porch, rocking chairs, and benches were designed to echo features of the Deer Park Hotel and its grounds. The land also memorializes First Lieutenant Robert E. Browning, a twenty-four-year-old U.S. Army Air Force pilot from Oakland who died on August 20, 1944, during his thirty-eighth combat mission over Toulon, France, when his B-26 Martin Marauder was hit by enemy anti-aircraft fire and crashed in the harbor before the southern invasion of France; only three of the seven-man crew survived, and he had received the Air Medal, five oak leaf clusters, and the Purple Heart. A parcel donated by the Browning family in his memory now comprises Dailey’s Park and its parking lot.
