During the Texas Revolution, Mexican forces under General Antonio López de Santa Anna besieged the Alamo in San Antonio de Béxar for 13 days, from February 23 to March 6, 1836. Texian and Tejano defenders under William Barrett Travis and James Bowie, with Davy Crockett among them, held a former mission poorly suited for defense and short of men and supplies. After Santa Anna’s troops entered the town, raised a no-quarter flag, and refused honorable terms, the defenders called desperately for reinforcements. Mexican batteries and cavalry tightened the siege, and a final assault before dawn overwhelmed the garrison. The fall of the Alamo became a defining episode of the Texas Revolution.
