In the first race, a car flipped onto its roof, and the driver, after regaining consciousness while being loaded into an ambulance, helped upright the car, reentered the race, and finished 15th. Cannonball Bob Baker, who worked at France’s local gas station, outran him for third place. France won the year’s second race in a 1939 Buick, slowing so the race would look closer. Before the year’s final race, the rules changed to allow only less powerful and lower priced cars than France’s Buick.
