The Texas Civil War Museum in White Settlement near Fort Worth operated from 2006 until October 30, 2024, and was regarded until its closing as the largest American Civil War museum west of the Mississippi River. Built by oil executive Ray Richey around his private collection, it featured galleries of Civil War militaria, Judy Richey’s Victorian dresses, and Confederate material from the Texas United Daughters of the Confederacy, including the former Texas Confederate Museum collection from Austin. It became prominent both for the size of its holdings and for controversy over interpretations of the war that critics said reflected Lost Cause views.
