Betsy Ross is best known for making the first American flag. After losing her first husband to the American Revolution in 1776, she continued to run their upholstery business, making extra income by mending uniforms and making supplies for the Continental Army. She later made flags for Pennsylvania. A stone cottage was named in recognition of her support of the American Revolution, and the cottage was constructed in 1922 and served as one of the six classrooms and dormitories that housed students of Ellis Cottage.
