The Griffen Cannon was one of 1400 guns made at Phoenix Iron Company Shops between 1860 and 1865 and was invented by John Griffen. These 3 inch wrought iron rifled field pieces served Union forces with great merit during the Civil War. The memorial also includes "My Brothers," a mural painted by Joseph C. Hennesy, portraying reconciliation after the war through the image of a figure walking between one brother loyal to the South and another to the North, with healing symbolized by a damaged tree giving way to new growth, a war-ravaged farmhouse rebuilt by hopeful hands, and the family restored over time. The Griffen Gun Memorial was dedicated as Phoenixville's Civil War Centennial Celebration on May 11, 1963. This building was erected and given to the Borough of Phoenixville by the Phoenixville Lions Club, the Griffen Gun was given to the Borough by the Phoenix Steel Corp., and many other donations came from various organizations and individuals.
