The single-room Ethel School stood near Ethel Road and the railway line and also served as a church where services were held every other Sunday. The earliest mention of it appears in a deed granting half an acre of land to the School Board of Lake County in November 1893. One teacher taught all grades together during a school year only three months long and was paid $3 per student per year. Once located behind the Lewis house, the school also served the small settlement of Wekiva, where Wekiva Falls is now found. Only white children were allowed to attend class, and Anthony Frazier is credited with establishing the first school for black children in the area.
