Harriet B. Jones, born 3 June 1856, became the first licensed woman physician in the state in 1885. She opened a private practice and then a hospital in Wheeling in 1892. Active in temperance and women's suffrage, she also promoted the establishment of state sanitariums in Terra Alta and Denmar, an industrial school for girls in Salem, and the children's home in Elkins. In 1924 she was elected to represent Marshall County in the House. She died 28 June 1943.
