Monticello Methodist Church was on the Leon Circuit of the Tallahassee District in the South Carolina Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1828. Adam Wirick, a minister on the Leon Circuit from 1828 to 1832, located in Monticello, and his name heads the list of trustees who purchased Lot No. 64 from Martin Palmer on April 24, 1832, where a log church was built. That log church was used until 1844, when half of the present property was purchased for construction of a frame building; the remainder of the block was purchased in 1879. The frame building was used until 1889, when the present structure was erected. The church remained on the Leon Circuit until 1838, when it became a station and James R. Smith was appointed pastor. It hosted the Florida Annual Conference nine times from 1846 to 1899. A choir loft was added about 1907 for installation of the first pipe organ in any Methodist church in Florida. Expansion began in 1941 with a classroom addition, and a fellowship hall-educational building was erected in 1958. The church belonged to three conferences—South Carolina from 1828 to 1831, Georgia from 1832 to 1844, and Florida from 1845 onward—and to several districts: Tallahassee from 1832 to 1838, Florida from 1839 to 1844, Tallahassee from 1845 to 1851, Madison from 1852 to 1863, and Tallahassee from 1863 onward. First called the Methodist Episcopal Church, it became the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1844, the Methodist Church in 1939 at unification, and the United Methodist Church in 1968.
